Somehow I have it in my head that structures like He gave me it or He bought me it are acceptable in some parts of the Anglo world. Am I wrong?

Not really. The structure seems fine. It's just that hardly any speaker ever chooses to use that structure when certain pronouns (you it) follow a ditransitive verb. In any case, it normally replaces a definite, not an indefinite, noun phrase, so one is more likely to be chose
