Hi. Please help. Let's say a person, a lady, had asked John Doe to do some work that required checking for errors for him. Upon completing the task, he attached it to his email, and the following is part of the message. Are they correct? I think they both are correct. I think no. 1 is correct since John Doe did it as much as he can currently do, that is, what his current capability allows. If they both are correct, can you give me a few more sentences where difference tenses are used depending on a person's current capability? Thank you in advance for your help.

1. I did it as much as I can.
2. I did it as much as I could.
