Speech & Pronunciation

I couldn"t pronounce the word "Restaurant" properly, like an American.

Dear friends greetings,
I recently listened to the word "Restaurant" being used by an american.I tried to pronounce like him but I failed to do so.I even tried from my Dictionary and internet online dictionary which has sound too,but again I couldn"t attain a mastery over this one particular word when it comes to pronounciation. Will you help me out?(Where to stress and where not to ...).It"ll also help me if you could give me some more words which Americans pronounce a bit differently ,or which you think are important to pronounce properly,Esp. like an American.
Thanks.

David, usually you'll hear "REST-rant" but sometimes "rest-uh-rant" - the rant rhymes with font, not can't.

I'm American. And res-der-aunt doesn't strike me as a common pronunciation of restaurant. What area is this from?

Barbara, it looks like you are in PA, where I was born and raised. In Pittsburgh, we said REST-r'nt. My mother, who still lives there in her 80's, still says it that way. But when we moved to Cincinnati we heard it pronounced "REST-a-raunt", and after checking with Merriam=Webster, that is the "correct" American pronunciation. We said a lot of things differently than the rest of America in Pit
