I could really feel how moved he was because I suspected he thought he wasn't even that close to the birthday boy.

Hi all

Could you please comment on this sentence? This sentence is part of a reflection of what happened during a birthday party. Did I use the past tense correctly for "suspected"? I am confused sometimes as to whether I should use the past tense or present tense to talk about thoughts that were made in the past in relation to the time of reporting but are still valid at the time of reporting.

I could really feel how moved he was because I suspected he thought he wasn't even that close to the birthday boy.

Thank you.

Best wishes

Peaceblinkfriend I could really feel how moved he was because I suspected he thought he wasn't even that close to the birthday boy. Correct. The present ( suspect ) is also good if it's just at the moment of writing this that you began to suspect it.
