I could never have imagined

It was a feast that I could never have imagined even in my dreams.
It was a feast that I could never imagine even in my dreams.

Do both of the above two samples sound right and make sense? If yes, are there any slight difference in meanings? Thanks.

I could never have imagined <--- at that time. In the past. Now I can, because I saw that feast.
I could never imagine<--- I can't imagine that... <-- This doesn't make much sense, but it depends what you really want to say.

That said, the part that gives me trouble is that "even". I wouldn't know where to put it. I think the

I agree with you that the first sentence makes more sense, but I suspect it's the subjunctive mood in the past--would+have+p.p.
