I could never give? Doubt with lyrics

The song is "Why Are We So Happy?" (1930) [public domain]

You can see and hear a small excerpt here:

My attempt:

MEN CHORUS: We have tried to keep my secret from you.
(On my way you get just what you do)
GIRL: Why you boys are happy? I could never give.
MEN CHORUS: It is just a story old that we must confess.

I am not sure about the words of the second line. I also have doubts with the expression "I could never give".
Can "give" be used here in the sense of "understand"? Does she say another word different from "give"?

I need your help. Thanks.

Is it better than the previous one?

Sorry, typo error. It must be "...a secret from you"
