I could hardly wait

Is there any difference between "I couldn't wait" and "I could hardly wait"? IS the latter poetic?
Thanks.

Hi, Is there any difference between "I couldn't wait" and "I could hardly wait"? Sometimes we use these without intending any difference. However, if you look at the actual meaning of the words, the former means 'I couldn't wait at all' and the latter means 'I could wait just a little bit'.
