Thanks! So I am only allowed to use "was/were" when it is a coditional clause?

For example: "If you were good, we could do that"

Thank you, me too, this is why I am asking. Is there a certain rule or clue?
At one time i read somehting like: "I was interested in your offer". So I thought I could use it like I did in my first sentence.
