Essay & Composition Writing

I can't understand this sentence,please.

The original sentences are here:

As many as 75% of shoppers abandon their electronic shopping cards before checkout. Internet retailers have developed services like online chats to deter them.

I especially can't understand the first sentence's meaning."As many as 75% of shoppers abandon their electronic shopping cards before checkout. " And what is the electronic shopping card?

Thank you,

Rai

As far as I know an electronic shopping card is a physical card similar to a credit or debit card that one carries on one's person. You would never intentionally abandon your card.

If your book is talking about something else I don't know what it might be.
