I can’t understand the overall meaning

“I was often weeks on end without putting my foot over the door-mat.”

Top answer

"weeks on end" means a continuous period of several (or many) weeks. "putting my foot over the door-mat" could mean entering or leaving a house or building, but from the full context it is clear that in this case it means leaving. In other words, the speaker did not leave the house for several weeks at a time.
