I can't think of it off hand

Hi,

I am just wondering about the meaning of "I can't think of it off hand" in the following conversation.

James: Do you know what Herold's phone number is?

Batty: I don't have my address book on me....I can't think of it right off hand.

I think it means that I don't remember or it's out of my hand... or something like that...but I am not sure.

Thanks in advance.

That's right; 'I can't think of it off hand' here means 'I can't remember it at the moment (but may do later)'. MrP

Hi,

I suggest that the emphasis of 'offhand' is more towards 'without preparation or thought', so 'I can't think of it off hand' suggests that if I took time to reflect, perhaps I could think of it.

Best wishes, Clive
