I can't run to save my life

Hello,

what does it mean "run to save my life"?

Here's the context:

For fitness, I do weight-lifting so as to strenghten certain muscles. I can't run to save my life and I'm not keen on it anyway; it puts too much stress on the joints. I play basketball for general fitness. I swim five or six miles a day five days a week. Once you're fit, you should really be doing the distance you're swimming in competition.
