I can't make myself understood.

Would you read the following paragraph?

The coming of the clock must have caused a great, if gradual, change in the social life of England. Its effects must have been felt in matters as widely separated as the keeping of a private engagement and the launching of a military attack. The watching of the heavens gave way to the watching of the dial and the hands.

I know that this paragraph tries to describe the effect of the coming of the clock. but What I can't understand is if the underlined sentence is relevant. If it is, can you tell me the exact meaning of the sentence? Give me an explanation by paraphrasing it.

The underlined sentence indicates the wide range of effects the clock had on people's lives, from the minor effect of being able to keep a personal appointment to the very major effect of being able to schedule an army's attack.
