I built a house yesterday.

Below is an excerpt from an American drama "Gilmore girls". Rory went to help build a house for just one day. And she is saying like below. The reason Rory says "I built a house" is that the other person is wondering how come she knew the construcion terminologies so well. She says, "I built a house yesterday", when she just helped for one day. Shouldn't she say, "I helped build a house yesterday", because she helped only one day?

A: I think it's okay. The studs are definitely sound... the two-by-fours are a nice Number 2 structural grade.Or better, possibly.
B: .....
A: I built a house yesterday.

Hi, pructus Shouldn't she say , "I helped build a house yesterday", because she helped only one day? Sorry, but your question is certainly not about English grammar. Rory was within her rights to speak as she saw fit.

  • Sorry, but your question is certainly not about English grammar.
  • Rory was within her rights to speak as she saw fit.
  • We might think that what she said was not appropriate because she had just helped to build that house, but it is quite important that we realize when we should separate correct grammar from reality.
  • So, you can put yourself in Rory's shoes and even wonder why she did not give an accurate description of the situation, but you cannot really determine what the right thing for her to do was at that time.
