I brought you something

Hi everybody

I would like to know if there is a difference in meaning between the sentences:

I brought you something

I have brought you something

when you are giving a gift to someone just at the moment you arrive at their house. I say it because I saw the former but it makes more sense to me the latter.

Is it true that Americans tend to use past simple whereas British use present perfect for these cases?

Regards.
