I ask you a favor = I ask a favor of you.
I know the two sentences are the same and grammatically correct.
I ask you a question = I ask a question of you.
Here in my country, a grammar book says that the two sentences are the same and grammatically correct.
However, I think that "I ask a question of you" is grammatically wrong and it is widely spread here in my country.

Hans51 "I ask a question of you" is grammatically wrong It is correct. However, it is very formal and so stilted and old-fashioned that we expect you to be dressed like this when saying it!
