I am writing a paper

I am writing a paper about events that changed someone's life. Which of these two is correct:

1. It was his later career in the radio industry and a great book that have changed his life forever.

2. It was his later career in the radio industry and a great book that had changed his life forever.

Could you please explain what's the difference? I'm really confused here.

If you are simply mentioning events in the past, just use Simple Past tense. eg It was his later career in the radio industry and a great book that changed his life forever. In #1, the Simple Past and the Present Perfect do not fit well together.
