I am wondering if

I understand that if you wanted to be polite while asking for something, you should speak in past tense, like "I was wondering if you could come with me," but is it completely WRONG to say like "I am wondering if you could give me a ride to school"? I mean, if a girl said that to her father, is she being impolite? Does it sound quite rude? Or is it simply a bit unnatural? English isn't my first language, so I don't know how it sounds. Tell me what you think, please! Thank you.

Don't worry. It's fine to be more direct with people who are close to us. She might say that, or she might say eg Can you give me a ride to school?
