I am studying at the University

Hi there.

I have a rather simple question. If we are university students, we should use the word university without the article in sentences like "I am studying at university", "I am at university", "I study at university", etc.

My question is, imagine somebody calls me while I am literally studying in the premises of the university and asks me about where I am, or what I am doing. Should I say,

"I am studying at the university"/ "I am at the university"

or

"I am studying at university"/ "I am at university"

Thanks.

Thanks a lot Clive.

I understand that in those two sentences we use the article because we are using the word "university" to refer to the place or building where the university is. But in that case, I don't understand the fact that in a book I have found the following sentence: "When she arrived at university, Professor ... was waiting for her".

Thanks again Clive.

Yes, the sentence would make more sense if it was the first time she arrived at university, but it isn't the case, she had been studying there for a while.

But anyway, I get your point and it's been really useful. I suppose non-native speakers overthink some trifling things like this, and at the end of the day it doesn't make much difference to a native liste
