Here is the question:
What are the pros and cons for children of watching television?
-------------
Since the invention of television made it popular around the world, people of all ages have been spending most of their leisure time watching television programmes. It is not the exception for children who can stick to the TV screen all day long. What are the benefits and drawbacks for people under 18 years old of doing this? In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the issue.
Let's begin by looking at the advantages of children watching television. One of the main possitives of watching TV is that it enriches children's understanding. What I mean by this is that they have the chance to get ideas of situations and events they may have never experienced in life. This can make a child more rounded as a person. Secondly, watching TV programmes can help release their stress which mostly comes from their study. Nowadays, children's life is packed with assignments related to their learning either at school or at home. Therefore, they are often under study pressure. Also, their parents are getting busier working to provide for their family's needs which are increasingly expensive in modern life so they do not have time to regularly take their children out for entertainment. These reasons lead to children's watching television that be a good way to relieve their nervousness.
Turning to the other side of the argument, watching TV harm children's physical health. In fact, they spend most of their time at school sitting still. In addition, when they are home, if parents do not limit the time, children are mostly couch potatoes who stick to the TV screen all the time. Therefore, there are plenty of chance that they suffer from eyesight problems and overweight. Another issue is that their mentality may be negatively affected if parents do not keep an eye on the TV programmes their children are fond of. This is party because modern TVs are now connected to the internet which offers all kinds of programmes including ones that are prohibited for children. Once they get through these negative programmes, can you just imagine what will happen to the mind of children who enjoy imitating others.
In summary, watching TV for children has positives and negatives; however, parents should weigh up these two aspects. Personally I believe, if parents are able to limit the length of time down and keep an eye on the programmes their children watch, the benefits may outweigh the drawbacks.
