I am speaking in English

Is it proper to say, "I am speaking in English" or, "I am speaking English", or are both o.k.?

When we want to ask the question,"Do you speak English?", we never ask "Do you speak in English?"

However, "I am speaking English." and "I am speaking in English." are both OK.

If someone asked me "What language are you speaking?"

I would answer: "I am speaking English."

"in" is not needed and makes the sentence sound a bit odd.

I am writing a book in English.
Sometimes you have to use "in English" with "writing", as in the above sentence. If you immediately follow "writing" with a direct object, you usually have to use "in English".

I am writing (a letter)(some sentences)(my report)(the instructions) in English'.
