I am so confused. Please help me.

The government acknowledged that the tax was unfair.
Vs.
The government accepted that the tax was unfair.

I have always been confused between the two verbs. Could somebody explain and make me clear, please? Thank you in advance.

With acceptance, there is a greater sense of taking the same point of view as those who make a claim. With acknowledgement, there is only a recognition that others have made a claim; agreement with that claim is not necessary.
