Do Sport Programmes Discourage Young People?
In the last years there has been a huge increase in sport programmes on television, so that it is quite impossible not to find at least a channel broadcasting football matches, swimming races and so on throughout the day. As a consequence the number of spectators has increased enourmously. But how could this influence the youngest regarding their interest in partecipating in a sport themselves?
It is frequently asserted that watching sports demotivates young people from taking part in a sport. There may be some justifications for this. Watching athletes give all themselves and still fail can be frustrating. Especially the youngest could end up thinking that there is no reason for losing time on something that even one of the best athletes couldn't manage to succede in. Moreover the innumerous sports that we see during all day on television can really be confusing. But I assume this cannot be true for every young person that enjoys watching sports.
In my opinion, considering also m own experience as a marathon runner, sport programmes can defenetly have an opposite influence on people. Me myself I begun doing sports after watching the Ethiopian 10 km runner Tirunesh Diba win the golden Olimpic medal. Moreover I don't think all young are interested in winning races, some just love sport for the way it makes them feel, or simply they are more keen on it than others that find sport annoying and prefer t watch it instead.
In conclusion, not considering the rare cases of demotivation, there are many people, both young and old, that are actually pushed to take part in a sport by sport programmes.
