Vocabulary

i am not judging

This is a dialoge from Friends
Joey: If the Home sapiens were, in fact, "homo" sapiens.., is that why they extinct?
Ross: Home sapiens are people.
Joey: hi, i am not judging.

I am not sure what the last sentence means? Can you explain this and rephrase it? Thanks a lot.

Hi, They are playing with the words '**** sapiens' and 'homosexuals'. eg If people were all homosexuals, we would become extinct. 'I am not judging' here means I am not making any moral judgements on whether one of these two 'groups of people' is good or bad.

Still do not it very well. Why did Joey say has anything to do with "moral judgement?" Or why did Joey think that Ross might think he was doing moral judgement? Thanks.

Hi,

People often make remarks about homosexuals that involve moral judgements. Joey wanted to make clear that he was not odoing that.

Close ...but not quite guys

Joey: If the Home sapiens were, in fact, "****" sapiens.., is that why they extinct?
Ross: Home sapiens are people.
Joey: hi, i am not judging.

Joey thinks **** sapiens are an extinct form of people and is making a joke about maybe they are extinct because they are gay (****)

However, **** sapiens is the name for modern human beings.

Thanks, Nona -- I interpreted this the same way you did but didn't ahve the energy to spell it all out. It's made more confusing by the fact that "**** sapiens" is sometimes, but not always, misspelled as "home sapiens," as though that's something different.

Also, "Hi, I'm not judging" should almost certainly be "Hey, I'm not judging." We use "hey" that way, not "hi."

I feel terribly sorry; but I have to confess that I made a mistake to mess up the dialoge. The correct version should be like this:

Joey: If the Home sapiens were, in fact, "****" sapiens.., is that why they extinct?
Ross: Home sapiens are NOT people. (NOT was missing from my original quote)
Joey: hi, i am not judging.

I am very sorry for this again.

Osee, now it makes no sense at all! What about "Home sapiens" -- shouldn't it be "**** sapiens"? "Home sapiens" does not mean anything.

I will double check this again.

Hi,
"Home sapiens" does not mean anything.

It makes some sense if they are just trying to make jokes, to play with words. People do that a lot, and remember that 'Friends' is a comedy.
Or, of course, it may just be someone's typo.
