I am not a Ma'am

Yes, Ma'am.
I am not a Ma'am.

Why a woman denied like this? I thought people called a woman Ma'am was to show respect. Does Ma'am implies aged or something? Thanks.

Having served as an office of the armed forces and having been commissioned before I was 22 years old, I have no problem being called ma'am.

People who object to titles of courtesy are seriously lacking in courtesy themselves, if they use that type of response to let you know they prefer another form of address.

Hi Mister,
Does the order play an important roll? Or it is just an habit of English?
I usually put Madam front, as in the greeting a group of people: Ladies and Gentlemen, ...
Thanks a lot for comments.

Two of our very firmly entrenched customs:

Dear Sir or Madam: (salutation for a letter)

Ladies and Gentleman, may I have your attention please?

Don't ask why, that's just the way it is

bbser: Through most of my life, in informalsettings I have found that some women who are older than me don't want to be reminded that they're older

Ladies and Gentlemen, ...?
