I am looking or look forward to...

I am looking or look forward to hearing from you.

I would always use "look forward" as it's a mental and feeling state. I think that either you look or don't look forward (no duration).
I think that (opinion) - I think or not that you are right
I'm thinking (duration) - I'm thinking about what I'm going to say...

Sometimes I see "I am looking forward" so can anybody explain the difference?

Thank you

Hi, I am looking or look forward to hearing from you. These are such standard and common sentences that there is no real difference, except that 'look forward' is a little bit more formal. Clive

Would you use that expression in a letter to an ambassador?

Yes.
But I've never written to an Ambassador.
