I am looking for a word.

Hi everybody.

I am really curious what that thing in the middle of an apple called is. (Look at the picture attached) We have a really funny word in Swiss German. I was trying to figuere it out with Wikipedia but I didn't succeed.

I'll let those more qualified give an answer, but for my tuppence worth, if you mean the whole middle section, including the pips in the middle and the stalk/leaves at the opposite end - ie shaped a bit like: )( - its the "core" of the apple. If you just mean the leaves or stalk, then they are normally called just that; the leaves and stalk. Unless anyone knows a more official name...

Yes, I'd call the middle the "core" too.

The specific part you've circled at the bottom of the apple is the remains of the sepals.

Well, collectively the sepals are the "calyx". There should be five sepals, since the domestic apple is a member of the rose family.

WOW! Ok, each one of these little things that look like leaves are sepals? An appel has like five sepals. And the calyx is a collective terms for all of the sepals. Right?

That's it!

When the apple was an apple-blossom, it was the other way up, with the stalk at the bottom and the calyx at the top. The five petals of the apple-blossom were then attached above the calyx.

(If you think of a wild rosehip, you'll see that it has the same structure as an apple, on a smaller scale.)
