Letter Writing

I am Japanese. Working on a letter of motivation

Hello, I am currently working on a letter of motivation for graduate school in Belgium. Actually this is the first time I have written a letter of motivation in English, so to be honest I am not sure if I wrote it in proper way. It would be so helpful if you give me any tips. Thank you so much for your help. I am looking forward to your comment.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in applying for the Master of Communication Studies, “New Media and Society in Europe,” at xxxxxxxxx university in September 2014. I am sure that my extensive communications knowledge and work experience in intercultural fields makes me a very good candidate for this program.

I graduated from xxxxxxxxx university with a B.A. in Communications in 2012 with grade point average of 3.48. During my four years of study, I studied abroad twice in England for one semester and America for two semesters. In Japan, I focused on communication studies with a perspective featuring world diversity and embracing new ideas. I learned about culture and ethnicity in Europe, America, China and Southeast Asia. I also involved myself in finding methods of providing information effectively through presentations and publications. Since I took anthropology and a third of my courses in English, I earned 140 credits out of the required 120 credits for graduation, and earned a high class ranking. On the side, I organized support for international students as a volunteer and helped tutor Japanese and escort late arrivals.

In England, I was interested in European art and architecture, and focused on practicing my English through the language and British cultural study program. Since I was also selected for a one year program in America as an honor exchange student, I continued my communications study there. I had extra enthusiasm about learning intercultural communications with American students; I was able to directly experience an American perspective of the Japanese and values differences between East Asia and the West, including often-hidden stereotypes. On the side, I attended the local church every Sunday. Although I had been exposed to Christianity in Japan, attending church in America allowed me to experience more clearly the differences between Buddhism and Christianity. Seeing baptism and hearing the pastor’s sermons helped me understand why people deeply adhere to their beliefs.

After graduating from my university, I began working for a chemical retailing company as a sales specialist and utilized foreign languages and intercultural communication skills. I negotiated prices of oleochemicals with companies in Southeast Asia for importing. As I continued selling chemicals to Japanese companies by negotiating and researching market conditions, my analytical and critical skills have greatly improved. My experience with business dealings in Southeast Asia has also given me knowledge of some aspects of international business.

Having experienced various cultures, I would like to present this diverse world to the Japanese (especially younger people) as a journalist. Although the globalization process has brought easier access to information by way of the Internet and other media, the information available in Japanese is still limited. If there was more world information in Japanese provided by various types of media, Japanese people would have more opportunity to think about how to live in the world. Although Japanese people historically have experienced a monoracial and conservative society compared to western countries, a broader perspective will better prepare for them for living in the modern world.

xxxxxxxxx University has a multilingual and multicultural environment. I believe that studying European mass media from renowned professors with a diverse student body there would give me immense incentive and increase the options for pursuing my future career goals. The European Union has one of the largest voices in the world and is known for its open media and diverse society. I feel that knowing how the globalization process affects media and culture is very meaningful. I believe studying in Vrije University Brussel through classes and internships will prepare me for a great career in the media industry.

Thank you so much for considering my request. I am looking forward to your positive reply.

Yours faithfully,

xxxxxxxxxx
