I am in contact with

Hi.

The 10 residents I am in contact with have said they won't take part.

The 10 residents - a subject;

I am in contact with - a subject postmodifier (a relative clause adjectivally modifying the subject);

have said - a verb;

they won't take part - an object.

Is my parsing correct?

Thank you.

The subject of the main clause is the noun phrase the 10 residents I am in contact with , in which the relative clause modifies the nominal 10 residents . Have said is two verbs. They won’t take part is a complement of the verb said , not an object.

  • The object of an active clause typically corresponds to the subject of a related passive, but *They won’t take part was said by the 10 residents is not grammatical.
  • Also, non-parenthetical adjuncts can’t normally intervene between a verb its object ( *She saw often Tom ), but in your sentence said and its complement are separable: …said several times that they won’t take part.

No. ‘Complement’ in this case does not mean ‘predicative complement’ or ‘subject complement’.
