"I am and won't be your friend" - is this a correct statement?

Hi,

English is not my mother tongue, so I was wondering whether it would gramatically be correct to say or write: "I am and won't be your friend" instead of "I am not and will not be your friend" or "I am not and won't be your friend"?

Could you please assist me?

Thank you very much for your help.

Could you please assist me? "I am and won't be your friend" I wouldn't say it's wrong, although it's very awkward.

  • But I intrepret it as 'I am your friend now, but will not be your friend in the future'.
  • "I am not and will not be your friend" Fine "I am not and won't be your friend" Not good style.

Dear Clive,

thank you for your quick response. You're right, it really does sound awkward, but not wrong either. I wonder whether any english grammar book answers this question. Thanks again for your assistance.

All the best,

Gabe
