Hello! My native language is spanish and sometimes I get confused and don't know for sure if I'm using a literal form of a spanish expresion or if I'm translating it correctly. Here goes: if I want to say that some event that occurred in the past may have caused certain events or structures that we see today or if I want to describe a hypothetical event that may have taken place, is it correct to phrase it in the following ways?
1) The current patchy distribution of the species would be the reflection of the latest climatic fluctuations
2) These open spaces would have been a proper habitat for the species
