Hypothetical in the past?

Hi. Let's say a person named John Doe had died some years ago and one of his friends was talking about him with some person about John Doe. Are these correct? Thank you in advance for your help.

1. I think he (John Doe) would have done it if he had money left over at that time.

2. I think he (John Doe) would have done it if he was (were?) rich.
