Here is a hypothetical situation: The sea level rises by 2 meters.
Here is a hypothesis: Mars once had a lot of liquid ground water in lakes, seas and rivers.
Here is another hypothesis (It can be postulated once the previous hypothesis has been tested and found to be true): Life forms developed on Mars, but died out when the planet lost all of its ground water.

A hypothesis is a statement of something that may or may not be true, now or in the future.
Scientists often propose a hypothesis, and then try to design an experiment to test if it is true or false.
The hypotheses that have been tested by many methods and always found to be true are called "theories."
For example: The heliocentric theory of the solar system is this: the sun is at the center, and all the planets, including earth, revolve around it in elliptical orbits.

Defining it informally, i.e., not like a dictionary would do, I'd say it means 'under consideration', 'imagined'. You use this word when you're talking about some alternate possible world, some alternate possible set of situations which don't actually exist.

Suppose I had a million dollars. (This statement contains a hypothesis. I am just asking you to consider it, to imagine it.)
