I said, 'Hypocrisy prevails in the name of democracy in our society.'
However, my friend argued that the sentence should be 'Hypocrisy prevails in the guise of democracy in our society.'
Which one is correct? Please help. Thank you.
Each version has its own meaning, so it's not a matter of saying that one is correct and the other is incorrect. This has to be judged on whether the sentence accurately expresses the idea that the writer wants to convey. to prevail in the name of democracy suggests (to me) that hypocrisy may in some way prevail because of democracy, or that democracy serves as a justification for hypocrisy.
