Hyphens in adjectives/modifiers

Hi, if using the words "second most common" as an adjective, should the words be separated by hyphens?

second-most-common reason or second most common reason

Hi, why is this?

I thought words that collectively modify a noun, need to be hyphenated, unless the word ends in ly.
