'Above mentioned' - hyphenated, one word or two? I see all these in use now.

Hi,
Above mentioned is a two word phrase that I don't see the reason why it should be hyphenated. However, a similar word, aforementioned is considered a single word.

I go for the hyphenated version; so do the Oxford ALD and 20 online dictionaries at onelook.com. Four dictionaries give the one-word version, none the two-word version.

Thank you for the correction.

It wasn't really a correction. I wasn't absolutely sure which forms were acceptable myself until I checked at onelook.com.

The Corpus of Contemporary American English has 127 citations for the hyphenated version, 30 for the one-word version and 78 for the two-word version, so you are not alone.

Regarding such phrases, I have the impression that they start off as a two word phrase, and upon the frequent use of the phrase, it will get hyphenated and finally will be treated as one word, but it is difficult to see at which stage a phrase is and for the most part, there is no right or wrong alternative and it boils down to a the individual's choice.
