Mister MicawberIt is an adjective.

Hi, MM

But is this good enough reason to say it requires a hyphen? Quite often we don't need it if it is clear without it. Isn't this a case in which the hyphen is unneeded?

It is not a reason, it is just an added explanation-- my idea was to contrast it with 'a supply for 12 months'.

The hyphen is necessary because the number of '12' does not concord with the number of 'month'.
