Hyphenated or not?

Hello Everyone

I'm writing a poem which has the following two lines:

fir tree growing tips

hardening to cones


Does 'growing tips' need a hyphen? Without it, I think the line could be read to mean tips for how to grow a fir tree. I do struggle with hyphens.
