Hyphen in nonprofit

Am I correct in assuming that here is a hyphen in non-profit when it is followed by a noun as in non-profit organization because it is a compound adjective and that there is no hyphen when no noun follows?

When no hyphen is used, would there be a space as in non profit or nonprofit?

I think both nonprofit and non-profit are considered good English. I see non profit much less often.
