Hyphen for perfect-tense verbs used as adjectives?

Since I am not all too familiar with grammar terms, I'd like to keep it brief and ask if this example sentence has correct grammar:

"He used a hollowed-out coconut as a bowl."

My main concern is about "hollowed-out". It appears to be a perfect-tense verb that's used as an adjective to describe "coconut". And I wonder if this verb/adjective thing should be hyphenated or not.
