Hyphen?

I am not sure if this is the right place for my question - I'm very sorry if it's not!
I am not a native English speaker, and was wondering which of these two is correct:

"I am studying second- and third-year courses"
"I am studying second and third year courses"

Thank you very much in advance!

The first is the correct use of the suspended hyphen. Many argue that there is no longer a need to hyphenate phrases like this, so, depending on whether or not you adopt that thinking, the second sentence might also be viewed as correct. I personally prefer the suspended hyphen.
