Are 'aquaplane' and 'hydroplane'
the same thing?

com they are not. Hydroplane is either a plane that can land on or take off from water, or a speedboat that is equipped with hydrofoils to enable it to skim the water and reach a higher speed. Whereas an aquaplane is a board that is pulled by a speedboat with a person standing on it, and not the boat itself.
