hurt/hurting people worldwide

For over 35 years, the organization has given aid and hope to hurt/hurting people worldwide.

Do both hurt and hurting fit in the above and mean about the same? Thanks.

'hurt' may not be the word you are looking for here. 

hurt

1 cause pain or injury to

2 make unhappy; upset.


Suppose Tom was hiting Ken. Then you would say 'Tom was hurting Ken.'

I would probably say something like '...to people affected by drought' or '...to displaced people', depending on

To make sure, if the word that fits in my first post is hurting, then does it mean the following?

I am not sure as to whether the word 'hurt' could be used naturally in this context with the meaning that you are looking for. I am thinking of people who are suffering from a particular disease, war, drought etc.

To me, 'hurting people' implies an emotional pain (depression?) as opposed to a physical one. So I would probably not use the word 'hurt' in this contex
