Hunting camels in Arizona

I heard that it is illegal to hunt camels in Arizona. Are there any camels there? Why can't people do that?

Please advise.

Ooops! Have I done anything wrong? No offense, but I just think it is an interesting law.

The Arizona forests have some wild animals, but not camels. Rarely, one can see camels in Fairgrounds stadium, Phoenix, especially in circus performances.

There are many really strange laws that exist (and usually aren't enforced) in the United States.

You have to look real hard for them:

The army imported some camels before the Civil War. It was an experimental program to move freight and men in the desert. A few of the camels got loose but I'm sure they are all dead by now. Here is a link to an article with more about it.

"The US Army once experimented with camels in the Arizona desert, and eventually gave up. The remaining camels were set free, and are now protected."

There are no camels in Arizona....except maybe in a zoo. This might possibly have been a law back around 1857 or so....when small herds were brought in to transport goods across the desert in the West. However, it never caught on and the Civil War put a stop to such small businesses. There is no current law on the books in Arizona concerning camel hunting.
