Hundreds of

A student of mine asked me what the word "hundreds" must be followed by the preposition "of" in an epxression like "We found hundreds of shells in the attic."

Any answers for me??

I believe that would be a safe statement. The [of] is needed to connect Hundreds to [noun] of some kind.

As in: Hundreds of demonstrators took to the street..
