In what situations can we use this expression ? Could you please elaborate a little bit on it ?
I am not a native and I don't hear it often in real life situations. But I have heard it many a time in movies ?

I know this is a stupid question, but just humor me and answer it.

Your friend is drunk, in a good-natured way, but he's embarrassing himself. You know it won't do any good to tell him to shut up, or to go home, so you just humor him (tell him his jokes are funny, etc.), rather than getting angry or trying to control him.
