Humour

.... He lit the lamp, a lantern which consumed six pies' worth of kerosene everyday, and kept it near at hand, since he did not like to depend only upon electricity, having to guard a lot of loose cash and a variety of miscellaneous articles.
Question:

How is this paragraph humourous?

My opinion: This is an extract from my book. The person referred here is a food vendor who sets up his portable stall near a cinema hall and sells food to make his living.

This paragraph just describes some of his activities. Whats the point of humour in it?

I cannot see through it.

One hint that I can give is that there is irregular electric supply in India due to power shortage.

Please helP!

I don't see much humor here. The only slightly humorous usage to me is the description of the amount o f kerosene - six pies' worth. I guess he would have to sell six pies to get enough money to buy oil for the lamp - does he sell more than six pies in a day?

Thanks for the help!!! Yes, he makes 5 rupees everyday, ie. 500 pies. 6 would be insignificant to him. Dont you think it could be the lack of trust??

But thanks for the help!!!
