I am in Grade 10, and am righting a human rights speech. It is meant to provoke anger and frustration to make the audience want to take action. Excuse my structure headings are still in but they obviously will not be in the speech.
Today we face a problem, a problem that our society is constantly overlooked and not prioritising against other pointless issues the country is facing, such as how fast our internet is. This problem is poverty, and I guarantee many of you don’t entirely understand poverty so let me crudely break it down for you. Poverty is pain. Poverty is hunger. Poverty is inequality. Poverty is penurious. Poverty is a matter of contention that you seem completely oblivious to and not taking action. Millions are having to endure the reality of poverty while wealthy individuals are living an extravagant life. It is up to you and me to make a difference to prevent even more fellow Australians subsiding into poverty. Body 1 Point: Poverty is a general scarcity of possessions and money. It is a global problem evident in every country in the world. According the international poverty line, you are deemed to be living in poverty if you are earning less than a $1.25 a day. Evidence: Let me give you a quick statistic, there are 2.2 billion children in the world. Out of these children, 1 billion are currently living in poverty. Explanation: If you don’t already have, I am almost positive all of you will have children sometime in the future. Imagine not being able to feed your child, not having a bed for them to sleep in or forcing them to beg for money on the streets just too barely support your family. Unfortunately this is the grim reality for numerous parents. Link: Aren’t you outraged that half of the children in the entire world are living in poverty. Why are you letting innocent children starve on the streets? How is it that there are individuals that have net worth’s of billions that are not making a difference? Body 2 Point:
Let me discuss poverty in Australia. Australia is in a state of poverty known as “relative poverty”, defined as the income inequality in the location in which people live. Explanation: There are fellow Australians out there living in conditions that you would be completely appalled at, sleeping on the streets with nothing but maybe a blanket if they are fortunate, rummaging through rubbish bins looking for scraps of food. In fact you have probably walked past these people, particularly in the CBD areas of your city. Did you help them? All it takes is to give them just $1 and you could make their day.
Evidence: It is a shocking fact that there are over 2.2 million fellow Australians living below the poverty line that is an overwhelming 12.8 percent of our population. Of these 2.2 million, approximately 575 000 are children.
Link: How are we letting children starve on the streets while we are constantly purchasing new clothes and upgrading to the latest technology. There is a habitual misconception in our society that these luxuries make us happy, however true happiness should be knowing you saved a child’s life and got her off the streets. We, the Australian people are hardworking, motivated and caring people and we must eradicate poverty from our glorious country.
Body 3 Point: Poverty has been evident for decades yet society has not bothered to take initiative. A common apprehension is believing that your effort will not solve the problem. Although an individual’s action won’t suddenly resolve the world’s paramount human rights affair, if everyone contributes I assure poverty will be abolished. Explanation: Don’t just blame yourselves for allowing poverty to worsen, the Australian government has not taken initiative. Our government only use poverty as a political weapon of sorts to make voters sympathise and vote for them, but have they solved poverty? Well judging from the statistics revealed beforehand, not at all. Evidence: I am definite that you are now pondering what action you can take to cleanse our poverty stricken society. There are 23.4 million individuals living in our fine country. My aforementioned statistic discloses that 2.2 million of this population is living under the poverty line. If the 21.2 million that are not living under the poverty line each contribute just $1, that will be a total of $21.2 million raised. That’s how simple it is ladies and gentleman, just $1 from the entire Australian public amounts to be enough to put an end to poverty in Australia. Link: Poverty is not going to solve itself, it is up to you and me to change the state of poverty. Spread awareness, sign a petition and participate in friendly protests and marches. Don’t wait for someone else to take action, go out there and make a difference, because if everyone has the same mentality of waiting for another to start something, no progression will be made.
Conclusion: Poverty is inequality. Poverty is thirst. Poverty is penurious. I am appalled at how our society neglects poverty, you need to stop being the bystander and make a difference. As I end this speech I want to ask you a question, don’t you find yourself ignorant now caring about how fast your internet is when there are people perhaps down the street sleeping on the curb and scavenging food from garbage bins?
