human manifestations started to play up.

Hi

Would you say the underlined part makes sense? And is it natural?

She was trying to appear stronger than she really was. She continued to concentrate on work and ignore her health. But within six months, human manifestations started to play up.

[human manifestations started to play = the signs of her being human (her health and all) started asking attention]

Thanks,

Tom

No, the meaning is unclear and odd. How about 'human frailties'? Or better, simply 'her health'.

Thanks, Clive. I understand.

But can we use the phrase "human manifestations" in a generalized way? Or, will it still sound odd?

[In fact, I saw something like the sentence below in a novel written in the 18th century.]

You may try to appear very strong, but don't forget that human manifestations are still there.

Sounds odd. Presumably it was fine hundreds of years ago.
