Vocabulary

hum

Hello everyone,

Two parts underlined below are confusing to me.
What do you think is the best meaning of "hum" in this context? Does it related to some location or some atmosphere?
And as for the second one, what could be the 40-mile slog? I mean 'subjcet'. The 3200 miles of trails or sections? or both?
And sections mean some part of the trails?

It might not be easy to know except the author but I'm just trying to find the best probable answer...so
would you check them and tell me your ideas?

Thanks a lot~

Let’s just say, if the state had a perfume, its essence would be bottled from the wilds around Bob Marshall. Running roughly from the southern boundary of Glacier National Park in the north to Rogers Pass (on Hwy 200) in the south, three designated wilderness areas hum within the complex. A medley of geology, plants and wildlife, Great Bear, Bob Marshall and Scapegoat are scintillating. National forest lands girding the complex offer campgrounds, road access to trailheads and quieter country when ‘the Bob’ hosts hunters in fall. The core lands encompass 2344 sq miles, with 3200 miles of trails and sections that are a 40-mile slog from the nearest road.

What do you think is the best meaning of "hum" in this context? Does it related to some location or some atmosphere? I think it refers to the sound of many bees - which metaphorically transfrs to mean these locations are particularly exciting.
